Deciding to construct a fence on your property is a big and often difficult decision. This fence will be a permanent component of the aesthetic look of the yard. None of us want a fence that is ugly.
We feel there are two choices, a fence that serves as a physical barrier to pest animals or an electric fence that serves as a barrier because it is uncomfortable to touch. While a chain link fence may be in order in an industrial setting, we don’t much like them in the home landscape. A wooden or stone fence can be very attractive, but in all cases will be very expensive, so we don’t deal with those here in Yardener.com.
On the left we discuss the merits of a barrier fence compared to the value of an electric fence. In our test gardens we have combined the two systems into a very effective barrier to all the serious pests of a garden – deer, rabbits, raccoons, and groundhogs – and we think it looks pretty good as well.
In the end you will make up your own mind if a fence is in your future.
