Cockspur Hawthorn (C. crusgallii Inermis )
The Cockspur Hawthorn is also known as the Haw, Red haw, Thorn, and Thorn-apple. The Cockspur Hawthorn is usually 15 to 25 feet tall and has many branches. The leaves of the Cockspur Hawthorn are simple, small, and arranged alternately on the branch. The fruit is a bright red, yellow, or black sphere. It is very tolerant of hot dry sites, is generally maintenance-free and has few pests.
The flowers are white and have a slightly disagreeable odor for seven to ten days. For this reason, you may not want to plant next to the main entry of the home. The bark is an interesting combination of brown and gray, often exfoliating slightly on older wood to expose an orange-red to rust-colored under-bark. Inermis cultivar has no thorns.
