Fullmoon Maple (Acer japonicum)
The Fullmoon Japanese Maples tend to be smaller than their A. palmatum cousins growing from 10 to 15 feet tall with a strong, open and attractive structure. The leaves are so finely divided as to created a lacy texture. The prominent seeds which are retained for a long period are especially attractive in the fall in deep red or maroon color. The fall color of the foliage is outstanding.
Most cultivars of Fullmoon Maple have rounded, lobed leaves and a sturdy growth habit. Leaves are larger than the regular Japanese Maple, they may be 3 to 4 1/2 inches across . The also have more lobes than A. palmatum, the with the larger fullmoon types having leaves with 7 to 13 lobes. Their flowers are a bit more obvious but look pretty much the same as the A. palmatum. They are often used in a landscape situation where they fall colors of bright green to deep crimson will show up against evergreens or garden walls. While it is rated to grow as far north and zone 5 it is happiest further south.

Aconitifolium has deeply lobed leaves, brilliant crimson fall color, and grows to a rounded, bushy 8 to 10 feet. Aureum has rounded greenish gold spring and fall foliage. Grows 12 to 15 feet and spreads slightly wider. Elegans leaves have rose-colored edges when they first open. Obsakazuki has yellowish to green leaves, turning red in fall, has best fall color. Aureum (synonym A. shirasawanum ‘Aureum’)
