Month to Month Care for Highbush Blueberry
Month of March Highbush Blueberry – If you want another young Highbush Blueberry, plant it this month or next month.
Note: there is no need to fertilize shrubs until fall.
Month of April Highbush Blueberry – this shrub has white flowers in the spring.
Month of June Highbursh Blueberry – You should be getting very tasty blue-black berries in the summer. If you favor wildlife these berries are loved by grouse, catbird, mocking bird, scarlet tanager, bluebirds, thrushes, and many other songbirds. If you want some berries for yourself you will need to cover the plants with bird netting prior to the berries becoming ripe.
Month of July Highbush Blueberry – Just as with other plants on the property, shrubs are vulnerable to heat and drought of the summer months. They need to be watered if there has been no rain for two weeks.
Month of August Highbush Blueberry – Just as with other plants on the property, shrubs are vulnerable to heat and drought of the summer months. They need to be watered if there has been no rain for two weeks.
Month of September Highbush Blueberry – If you want more Highbush Blueberry, plant them this month or next month.
The fall is an important time to fertilize all shrubs either this month or next month. Sprinkle one cup of slow-acting granular all-purpose fertilizer on the soil under each shrub out to the distance from the trunk to the tips of its branches (its drip line).
Month of October Highbush Blueberry – Optional Task - Highbush Blueberry benefit from watering in the late fall just before the ground freezes.
Month of November Highbush Blueberry – This is a good time to check to make sure that the layer of mulch under your shrubs is at least 2 to 4 inches deep in preparation for the cold winter months.
