Korean Stewartia (Stewartia koreana)
The Korean Stewartia makes an ideal understory tree with a pyramidal to oval shape. This tree is very similar to the Japanese Stewartia. The main differences are the Korean species has saucer shaped flowers, orange-red fall color, grows a bit smaller to 30 feet and has a longer flowering period, showing both before and after the flowers of the Japanese Stewartia. The beautiful bark of the Korean Stewartia tends to flake off in irregular puzzle piece shapes, rather than in long strips. Its color is a mix of steel gray, browns and orange-brown, with the underlying bark being very smooth
