Most spruces are noted for their cold hardiness. Spruces grow best in full sun, but tolerate light shade. They prefer a well-drained soil that is on the acid side (pH 4.6 to 6.5). They grow in almost any soil from silt to clay loams, as long as it is kept slightly moist and is well drained. They are not at all tolerant of highway salt, so they are best sited in yards rather than near the street or sidewalk.
