If possible, it is better to find a use for your old Christmas tree right there on your property rather than sending if off to the land fill.
1. Use branches as mulch - If you trim the branches off the tree, they make great winter mulch over a strawberry patch or over a flower bed. If you have a shredder, then shred the branches and use the mulch under shrubs and hedges, especially azaleas, rhododendrums, and hollies. The trunk gets cut up for fire wood.
2. Tree as bird feeder - Take your tree outside and place it in a bucket of damp sand which will keep the tree upright while helping to keep it green during the rest of the winter. Now decorate your tree for feeding the song birds in your yard. Examples include strings of popcorn, strings of peanuts still in the shell, or strings of apple wedges. Tie on strips of aluminum foil and daub the ends with peanut butter. Hang suet blocks purchased at the grocery store or garden center. A bird bath, with a water heater, sitting near this wonderful bird feeder, rounds off the needs of your birds.
