Red Horse Chestnut (Aesculus carnea)
The Red Horse Chestnut is a wonderful tree for the home landscape. It is a hybrid of the Horse Chestnut and the Red Buckeye. More compact than its parents it will grow to a height and spread of from 30 to 40 feet. It is moderately tolerant to drought, wind, and sleet and resists the heat of the south very well. It bears attractive pink or red flowers and nearly smooth seed cases. Happy in zone 5A through 7B, it develops slowly into a round, very dense shade tree by five to seven years of age, and is outstanding in the landscape for its beautiful springtime display of pink to bright scarlet blossoms.
Red Horse Chestnut Choices
A.carnea Briotii is a more compact tree (20 ft) with 10 inch long red-flowered panicles and has no fruit. It has heat resistant dark, green foliage. Rosea has pink flowers. O Neil s Red has double red flowers. Fort McNair has flowers that are pink with a yellow throat.
