Almost any container that has drainage and can hold at least a quarter of a cup of potting mix can be used to start seedlings. Egg cartons are not appropriate. Some of the more popular commercial containers used for starting seeds are Peat Pots and small peat disks called "Jiffy 7's".

Jiffy-7 Jiffy Quality The Jiffy-7 pellet is made from sphagnum peat from specially selected peat bogs. Lime and a special fertilizer with a low ammonium content are added to the peat in order to stimulate growth. The pellets have a pH of approximately 5.3 and are wrapped in a thin, degradable net. Ideal for starting your seeds indoors! Just put a few seeds in each pellet and add water. Each pellet has its own compartment. All you have to do is put the dome lid on top and you have ideal temperature and climate settings to propagate your seedlings! Easy to use. Moisten soil mix such as Johnny's 512, push block maker down, turn, squeeze, and lift. Set filled block maker into a tray and release. Makes 2" square blocks for all vegetables, large-seeded flowers and herbs. Includes standard dibbles that make small depressions in the tops of soil blocks for seeds. Can also be fitted with optional Long Dibbles for large seeds or cuttings or 3/4" Square Dibbles to receive mini blocks. A soil block is a block of growing medium that has been lightly compressed and shaped by a form. A soil block serves as both a container and the soil for starting and growing seedlings, eliminating the need for plastic pots and trays for transplanted seedlings. Seedlings grown in soil blocks form stronger root systems than those grown in containers due to increased oxygen to the roots and the soil block's natural tendency to "prune" roots. This creates a substantial advantage when seedlings are transplanted into the field, because plants establish themselves more quickly and, because of lessened root disruption, they are less prone to transplant shock. The key to making good soil blocks is to use a mix containing the correct proportions of peat, compost, soil, and sand or perlite. A "blocking" mix needs extra fibrous material-peat-to bind the material together and help the block retain moisture. Some commercially available peat-lite mixes may work but often contain wetting agents and/or fertilizers that make it unsuitable for organic use.
