Junipers require full sun for best growth. In a shady spot they grow loose and spindly. FIn nature they like sites with open exposure such as prairies, cliffs, dunes, old fields, open hillsides, and rocky ledges, so if you have a similar environment it is a good place for Junipers. Junipers generally do well in coarse and sandy soils that drain very well. Their versatility extends to their ability to grow in soil that ranges from moderately acid to alkaline (pH 5.0 to 8.5). However, Junipers definitely do not like waterlogged soil (clay), which makes them prone to disease.
