Question From: Dallas, Texas, United States
Q: I live in central Texas and my wall of Boston ivy has browned out dry leaves like its winter. Heat has been 100 degrees the past 7 days. Is this normal? Is there anything i should do or worry about? We had record rainfall this spring and early summer. We had similar heat last summer and this did not happen.
A: Your ivy may have suffered winter damage and is weakened and not as able to adjust to excessive heat and drought. Inspect leaves that are beginning to discolor for signs of insects or disease. If you see damage take samples to your local independent garden center or nursery for a more accurate Id and recommendations of care. Excessive fertilizing will produce tender lush growth that may scorch. Water the vine at the base deeply twice a week. In late winter or early spring fertilize with an organic slow release fertilizer such as Espoma Plant Tone at the recommended rate. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
