Question From: B. Fleger - Nashville, Tennessee, United States
Q: The Bur Oak. Are the husks of the Bur Oak nut usable? I container garden and have a lot of the Bur Oak trees in my area. I'm wondering if they break down well in composting and if they add anything special to the composting. Also, I place wood chips on top of my containers if I added Bur Oak husks would it add anything beneficial to my plants (tomatoes, peppers and beans) that they would consume. Thanks.
A: Google using burr oak husks for compost or mulch and you'll get the straight skinny. They can be used, but may involve a bit of work and success depends upon your mulch mix. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
