Q: The past two or three years, our Jackmani clematis turns yellow, starting at the bottom & going up. It doesn't thrive like it used to. During the summer, sections of leaves turn brown & die. What could be wrong. Thank you for your help.
A: Your clematis is suffering from a fungus known as Clematis Wilt. Remove all infected leaves from the plant and on the ground. A systemic fungicide applied early in spring may help. When planting clematis plant it deep - the first two sets of leaves should be below ground and be sure it is well watered in periods of high heat and drought. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
Q: Thank you -I've removed the yellow leaves-now the clematis plant next to it is turning yellow. I will pick up the fungicide you mentioned. One place said to put on Epsom salt with water-that that has magnesium in it & clematises need that. Do you think that would help also. Thank you for your input. I appreciate it.
A: The Epsom salts will provide magnesium, however your soil may contain what the plant needs. I am not a fan of adding chemicals to the soil unless a soil test indicates the soil lacks it. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
