Q: I have an Engelman Ivy that gets partial sun but is doing very well, until about a month ago when NEW growth leafs started to curl. Upon a closer look, I can see a very thin white film. When I gently rub my finger across the leaf, I get some small black specs on my finger. I noticed that the underside of the leaf has a random scattering of very minute black specs. Is this an aphid problem or a fungus situation? (or something else). The plant is about 3 years old and is growing over a clear roof that covers the entry way to our house. Your advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.
A: Could be a combination of the two. Aphids give off a honey dew that is shiny and black sooty mold often grows on it. The white film may be powdery mildew. I would take some of the infected leaves in a baggie, to your local independent garden center or nursery that sells similar plants for a positive Id and recommendation on what pesticide or fungicide to use.
