Q: Hello, I received a forsythia stalk in a bouquet, used decoratively. It sprouted leaves. When the root ball grew large, I planted it in dirt- a pot, houseplant, gets full sun about 6 hours (?) . It seemed to be doing fine. Then I noticed the main stalk turning black about halfway up. Then the outermost leaves on that stalk shrivelled, all the way to mid-stalk, where the black started to spread. Now from the middle of the stalk to the end is black. The other smaller stalks are still fine & Healthy. I fear the spread. What is this and what can I do about it? Thank you!!!

A: If I read your content correctly, you kept the branch in water and it grew roots. Lots of roots. Then you potted it up. Problem - the branch grew roots - grew what we call water roots. When you potted it up they had trouble adjusting to soil. Also the six hours of direct sun indoors. Not the same as outdoors. Sooooo we have lack of sun - this is not a house plant. Best bet - cut off black branches - keep it moist and put it out on the fire escape. Don't fertilize and don't let it dry out. It may be beyond help so don't feel bad if it croaks. Go out and adopt a new houseplant. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
