Q: Compact how close to the house can a compact Japanese holly be planted. Average size 6 x 6 I am concerned about the travelling roots.
A:
The roots of hollies don't usually cause problems with foundations. However, the foundations do suck moisture from the roots and you will not be able to get behind them if work needs to be done. We tend to plant shrubs too close to houses. I too am guilty of that one. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
