Question From: J. SHERBY - East Brunswick, New Jersey, United States
Q: CICADAS! I live in central NJ, and we had 52 degrees yesterday. The cicadas havent arrived here yet.QUESTION ::What do I do so that the cicadas wont climb the trees? I heard foil wrap 2 feet wide and about 1 foot off the ground around the trunk.Does that work?I also heard to backwards wrap duct tape sticky side out, is that any good? I also heard SARAN wrap or a 2 foot swath of plastic sheeting. What works best please? I dont want those ugly brown shells littering the trunks of our trees when they DO get here. CAN YOU HELP ?? Thanks . JOHN s.
A: John, The report I heard said the cicadas do not harm the trees. I live in Michigan and we do not have the type that hatch out en mass every 17 years. I suggest you let them do their thing and than get out your blower vac and vacuum up the shell. Actually their shells make good fertilizer and don't last all that long.
