Question From: Troy, Michigan, United States
Q: Hi -- read your column every week! I have 4 "rhodies" (rhododendrons). I lost a fifth one over winter 2 yrs ago. Is there anything I should do to prep them now for winter? I have tried Wilt-Pruf anti-transpirant, but they still lost a lot of leaves and were not robust this season. Thank you very much!
A: Chet, There could be many problems with your rhodies. If they are planted next your home foundation they will be suffering. They are understory trees that thrive in organic rich, moist soil in a part shade condition protected from the hot sun of the afternoon. I would mulch them with 4 inches of wood chips - not that painted stuff. Scatter Holly-Tone by Espoma on the surface of the soil or on the mulch and keep them watered. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
