Question From: Grosse Pointe, Michigan, United States
Q: Hi Nancy, Just read your 9-18-15 article about "leaves reveal tree's health". My small maple tree was diagnosed with chlorosis by a professional arborist. Unfortunately I cannot afford professional treatment for the tree and wonder if there are products I can purchase to help this tree. In the last couple years there has been more tree root exposure. Do you recommend my building a stone circle around the trunk base and filling with soil. I will water more. I will appreciate any advice you can offer me. Thank you. I always enjoy reading your weekly column & usually cut it out.
A: If you raise the level of soil more then a couple of inches you will kill the tree. I would take a soil sample to English Gardens and have it tested. It's probably alkaline. Check out the following web-site: http://www.mortonarb.org/trees-plants/tree-and-plant-advice/horticulture-care/chlorosis for strategies that can be used by homeowners. The folks at English Gardens can help you select products that will be helpful and will do the job. Good Luck and Happy Yardening, Nancy
Comment: Hi Nancy,
