Q: My hydrangeas are about finished blooming . When and how should I prune them?
A: Depends on the specie - none should be pruned now. Carefully remove just the spent blooms if you choose, Mop heads and Oakleaf Hydrangeas are forming their flower buds now. So if you prune them you will cut off next summers flowers. Paniculatas and arborescense can be pruned in late winter or early spring. Hydrangeas do not need pruning so only do so if you wish to reduce their size. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
