A: It is indeed a Maple - London Planes, very common in England are quickly identified by their bark, which some would say resembles green champ pattern enlarged. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
Q: I just keep reading that planes resemble maples, but aren't actually maple trees. Is this correct?
A: They may be talking about the Planetree maple Acer pseudoplatanus, also called the Sycamore maple. Wood maven Michael Dirr says there are too many better choices in the maple family to choose from and does not display the fabulous fall color of other maples. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska MN. may have many examples for comparison. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
