Question From: Springfield, Massachusetts, United States
Q: My Garnet threadleaf Japanese maple tree was planted this spring. I noticed that the edges of the leaves are all white and although the tree seems fine, what causes this to happen? It has been a very hot, dry summer I realize. Is the tree OK? How should I prepare for winter. I live in Springfield, MA.
A: Sounds like leaf scorch to me. Japanese maples don't do well in windy areas. That and hot dry weather will do it. I would take a bagged sample to an independent nursery for an accurate ID. If it is leaf scorch, there is little to be done except keep the tree watered until the soil freezes. I would also mulch the tree with 3 inches of good organic mulch, not that painted crap made out of pallets. You can fertilize the tree in late winter with Espoma Tree Tone at the recommended rate. Move it if it is planted in a spot exposed to drying winds. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
