Japanese Maple Oozing White Substance From Bark

Question From: j. lawless - OHIO
Q: My five-year old Japanese maple suddenly started oozing a white substance from the bark below the branches. It now encircles the lower trunk. Any idea what is going on?

A:

Your JM has a fungal disease that may or may not be fatal. Heat and drought have weakened Maples and your tree probably has other issues. I recommend you have a certified arborist - a trained tree doctor, do an onsite inspection for recommendations. You can find one here: http://www.isa-arbor.com/faca/findArborist.aspx. If you have not been watering your tree, it has to be hurting. Best Nancy
