Question From: J. Perry - Stonington, Connecticut, United States
Q: Our Kousa Dogwood was planted about 3 1/2 years ago. The leaves appear pale green with small flowers compared to others in our area that have dark green leaves and large white flowers. The tree has not grown that much since it was planted. Do I need to fertilize the tree regularly and if so what time of the year?
A: Cornus Kousa do best in sandy loam rich in organic material. The leaves should be dark green. I would fertilize the tree with Espoma Tree Tone according to the directions. You may do so now and again in late fall. I would also mulch around the tree using a thin layer of quality compost covered with 3 inches of wood chips. None of that painted crap made of shredded pallets. Do be sure the tree is well hydrated, especially in the heat of summer. A deep watering is every couple of weeks is advised.
