Question From: S. Bachenberg - Lawrence, Kansas, United States
Q: We had a London Plane tree transplanted to our yard about 1 1/2 years ago. It was about 30' tall and was transplanted with a tree spade. It was late leafing out this spring, and has now dropped nearly all of its leaves. We had a very wet spring in Lawrence, Kansas, but the past 4-5 weeks have been very dry. The bark is also flaking off. Is the tree in danger, and what should we do? Thanks.
A: I think your tree may be toast. Peeling bark is part of the magic of a London Plane. Loosing leaves robs the tree of the ability to feed itself. Transplanted trees loose about 80 percent of their roots and take several years to recover. The soil surrounding the root ball and the root ball itself must be kept moist at all times. Fertilizer won't help the tree and chemical fertilizers may do more harm than good. Keep the tree well watered and hope for the best. That is all you can do. Best of Luck, Nancy
