Question From: Janesville, Wisconsin, United States
Q: My mountain ash has dark clusters of an unknown substance that covers the branches along with the leaves. These clusters fall off quite easily, not only when it is windy, and make an awful mess all over the ground, driveway and sidewalk. What are they and what can we do for it? We have been treating it for the Emerald Ash Borer, which we have been told is working to ward off the borer - so far! Thank you for your reply and any help you can provide. Virginia
A: The Emerald Ash Borer does not feed on Mountain Ash trees, so treating them is a waste of time and money. The person who recommended this treatment gave you bad information. The clusters are berries that have dried up due to heat and maybe drought. There is nothing to be done but clean them up. Hopefully next year will be cooler. Best Nancy
