Question From: WASHINGTON
Q: I have just notice that there are new leaves on my rose bushes that are shriveled and curling. The bushes ended their dormant period about a month ago so that the bushes are just beginning to leaf. This is a new occurrence that only became apparent in the last few days.
A: When roses begin to leaf out a sudden cold snap can kill t the leaves. Most shrubs have latent buds that will produce a new set of leaves. Use of high nitrogen chemical fertilizers stimulate excessive spring growth early in the season that's more easily damaged by frost. I'm a big fan of Rose Tone by Espoma, however if you have already fertilized wait until the first blooms appear to use it. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
