Q: At the base of a 40+ year old Norway spruce, there is a dusting of sawdust-like material. It seems to be accumulating. What is it?
A: Probably something is eating your tree. It's sawdust. If it were my tree I would have a certified arborist do an onsite inspection. 40 foot trees are expensive to cut down. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
