Pachysandra Does Not Look Well

Question From: Kingston, New York, United States
Q: My long established pachysandra is looking poorly, I read it likes alkaline soil but I have alot of acid loving plants in these bed which I've fed acid food around. Is this bothering the pachysandra or was it that we had no snow cover and freezing temps this past winter?

A: I don't know where you read pachysandra likes alkaline soil, but that is not true. That said, chemical fertilizers left on the leaves of the plants can burn them. They may also be suffering from winter kill. To refresh it, shear it back and do not let the bed dry out. It will produce a flush of new growth and all will be well.  Happy Yardening, Nancy.

Comment: Thank you Nancy, I did research further and found better info that said it prefers slightly acidic. I also discovered that I have eumonyous (?) scale so I've purchased appropriate horticultural oil , did a lot of clipping and will spray a number of times and hope for best
