Pine Trees Are Dripping Lots Of Sap-Like Substance

Question From: Temecula, California, United States
Q: In Northern Nevada our pines have have super shinny needles and are dripping what looks like sap from them, the sap catches the wind and blows on all the cars and houses. Under the pine trees are cement drives that look like they have water pools but it is actually sap... thanks

A: Excessive sap dripping from pines can be caused by insects, disease. or both. It may not be sap, but a sticky substance called honey dew produced by aphids. Drought has stressed the pines attracting a variety of beetles. Dripping sap is also caused by disease, mainly cankers. I recommend you have your trees inspected by a certified arborist ASAP. To find one in your area go to www.tcia.org and enter your zipcode. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
