Q: The leaves of the potted clematis on my terrace are turning brown and have white feathery stuff on the undersides. The bignonia capreolata next to it has reddish brown spotted leaves. I haven't sprayed either with an antifungal. I've just cut off the bad leaves. Both were doing fine before summer started, and now I think it's time to throw them both out. What do you think?
A: Your clematis may have powdery mildew. If you want to overwinter it plant it in a protected area a couple of inches below the soil level in the pot. In spring you can pot it up when the weather calms and is frost free. I'd donate the begonia to the compost bin. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
