Question From: Sterling Heights, Michigan, United States
Q: I have double play red spireas in my yard and they are not red. Does the soil content affect the color of spirea bushes? Is there anything I can do to bring the red color out?
A: The leaves of this shrub are burgundy when they emerge, but age to green. The flowers should be a crimson red. If dead headed when they turn brown - the sooner the better. They should give sporadic rebloom of color. The PH of the soil will not effect the color of the leaves or the flowers. Here's a website the shows photos of what the shrub looks like as it ages.
