Question From: Rhode Island, United States
Q: I have 33 year old large silver maple in my front yard. Most all the surface roots seem to have open decayed areas from being scraped wih the lawnmower. Some of the larger roots appear to have deeper decay like varying channels. Should there be concern for the anchoring of the tree's stability? Should the canopy be cut back to relieve any strong wind forces during storms or hurricane 40-50 mile an hour winds?
A: Herb, silver maples are not long lived and can be problematic. I had a silver in my back yard that looked fine and went down in a storm and took off the neighbor's back room. I recommend you have it inspected by a certified arborist ASAP. It's what you can't see inside the tree that is also worrisome. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
