Q: We planted two Katsura trees last June. They came back in the spring. They are planted in clay, although my husband did add other soil and mike's guaranteed stuff. The leaves are mostly green, but the lower tree has a reddish/brown cast to the leaves. The trees look ugly. The leaves are small and dry looking. They aren't falling off. The trees are skinny and about 9-10 foot tall. It's that a lot of the lower inside trees are brownish that has me worried. Why are they brownish and not green like the rest of the trees.
A: Crazy weather has played havoc with trees. We went from wet and cold to hot and dry overnight. Lack of water and sun scald could cause the discoloration. It takes 2 to 3 years for trees to become established. Katsuras are relatively intolerant of drought. Also, along with supplemental watering they require well drained soil. Their leaves are reddish brown with leafing out and turn green as they mature. Hope this helps, Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
