Question From: L. Smith - Sandpoint, Idaho, United States
Q: A friend has a Douglas fir about 80 feet tall, DBH 12-14 inches. The top 15 to 20 feet has suddenly turned brown and is thinning. The bole is showing several very small spots of pitching. Adjoining trees, also Douglas fir are not affected at this time. I am guessing insect activity in the top but am not sure. Any ideas? Thanks.
A: If it were my tree I would call a certified arborist for an onsite inspection. Look for one that is an active member of the Tree Care Industry Assoc. (TCIA.org) and The certified arborist Assoc. In my area (Michigan) the cost is about $75. Death of new growth is not good. If it is a disease or a bug it will spread to the other trees. Get it checked out ASAP. Best and Good Luck, Nancy.
