Q: I have a young tulip poplar tree with "blood filled bumps" on the lower limbs, particularly. Many bees have been attracted to the tree. Is this helpful for what I've heard is an endangered honey bee population? Also, what is scale?
A: The bumps are probably scale. They are an insect that build a protective covering when they enter their adult stage to protect themselves from predators. I'm not sure why the bees are attracted but that is a good reason not to use an insecticide at this time, in addition to the fact it will not be effective.
