Question From: S. Hawthorne - INDIANA
Q: I have a tulip tree and at the base of the trunk, the bark is looking weird and peeling away. Looking here on your site, it says this is a type of canker and branches should be pruned away. But this is only at the base of the trunk of the tree. Should I peel the bad looking bark away or leave it alone. Is there something I should put on it to help it? I don't know how old the tree is, we just bought this house in 2012. there was also a bad drought last summer and the buds all fell off before they had a chance to bloom. and a lot of leaves turned yellow and fell also
A:
If you value the tree spend the money to have a certified arborist do and onsite inspection and treatment. I never recommend homeowner play doctor with trees. You tree is in stress from the drought and may have several problems. Call a doctor. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy.
