Q: We have a tulip tree and last year bumps appeared on the tree. Inside the bumps looked like blood. The bark has now turned black. Do you know what might cause this?
A: I believe your tree has scale and the black bark is due to sooty mold that feeds off a honey dew exuded from the scale. If your tree is large you will need to have it professionally sprayed. If it were treated when you first saw a few bumps the cure would have been cheaper and the bark would not have turned black. It may take a year for the color to disappear.
