Q: The spire a I planted this year, with Mikes, will start to droop if not watered every day. It is growing fine, in fact I was thinking about pruning it a little, to give it some shape. Please advise.
A: Now is not the time to prune a shrub, especially in times of heat and drought. The best time to prune Itea virginica is after it has bloomed in later spring or early summer. Times vary with weather and location. If you can't keep your hands off the pruners, a least wait until the weather cools down. You may be pruning off next years blooms, so use a light hand.
