Question From: L. Harrod - Holliston, Massachusetts, United States
Q: I am having poor flower production from my hydrangeas,I live in Massachusetts. Could this possibly be from a lack of phosphors? If so could I use superphosphate to improve my situation
A: There are lots of reasons plants don't flower well. Lack of water will do it. Too much fertilizer or not enough sun are the most common reasons. It is never wise to add a nutrient like superphosphate without doing a soil test. If your hydrangeas are mopheads, the buds begin to form in fall. Pruning in fall, late winter or spring and you will cut off the flower buds - hence no flowers. Begin by identifying what kind of hydrangeas you have and go from there. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
