Q: Dear Nancy, I bought a roughly two-year-old bare root maple tree. It was 2 to 3 feet tall when I got it. I planted it and the top portion (top 80%) immediately died. I removed the dead wood and now the tree is about 7 inches tall. It is producing good leaves and tiny branches. However, it has not grown in height in a year. I planted it in March 2016 and now it is April 2017. Do you think this tree will survive? Will it ever grow taller than 7 inches? I would appreciate any advice you have. A: If it leafed out it should live, Key is keeping it watered. The soil should be kept moist, not soggy. Remember, you planted it bare root so it's spending its energy forming roots. You can fertilize it with Espoma Tree Tone at the recommended rate. Less is not more, so follow the directions. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
