Question From: L. Bailey - Monroe, Michigan, United States
Q: Dear Nancy, I lost 2 southern magnolia's - Edith Bogue - this winter, as well as a new pussywillow. One of the magnolia's has sent up new growth as has the pussywillow.. will anything come of this? or shall I just accept that they're gone.
A: The pussy willow will come back, although it may take some time to reach its original size. Hopefully it was not grafted and the new growth will be identical to the original. You will know next spring when the catkins emerge. Your magnolias may have also been grafted so the same situation applies. According to my research Edith Bogue is only hardy to zone 6 - and St. Louis is given as its Northern most region. I would consider replacing your trees with another - more hardy variety. I have a yellow Butterflies that was hybridized by a gentleman in Bloomfield Hills. I'm 50 miles north of Detroit (zone 5) and it has no damage. Hope this helps. Best And Happy Yardening, Nancy
