Q: I started zinnia seeds indoors and then transplanted them into my greenhouse. The zinnias are starting to bloom but when the blooms open the petals are half curled on the sides and look dry. Also some of the blooms open with no color and look completely ugly and dry. Are they needing a certain supplement or fertilizer?
A: The is not a fertilizer issue. My guess would be a disease called aster yellows. There is no cure. Before you pull the plants take samples to your independent garden center or nursery that sells or, better yet, grows these flowers for a more accurate ID and possible control.
